Background of the study
With the growing demand for remote learning and online education, the need for secure and reliable methods of conducting remote examinations has become more critical. Online exams, while offering flexibility and convenience, have raised concerns regarding academic dishonesty, such as cheating and plagiarism. Remote proctoring systems use technology to monitor students during online exams, ensuring integrity and fairness in the assessment process (Ibrahim & Shuaibu, 2023).

Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto has increasingly adopted online learning, but the challenge of ensuring exam integrity remains a significant issue. A remote examination proctoring system could provide the university with an effective tool to conduct secure online exams while ensuring that students are assessed fairly. This study aims to design and implement a remote examination proctoring system that utilizes various monitoring techniques such as video surveillance, screen monitoring, and AI-based behavior analysis to detect any form of academic misconduct.

Statement of the problem
Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, faces challenges in ensuring the integrity of online exams, which could be compromised due to the lack of a secure proctoring system. This study aims to design and implement a remote examination proctoring system that ensures the security and fairness of online exams.

Objectives of the study

  1. To design a remote examination proctoring system for Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

  2. To implement the system and integrate it with the university’s online examination platform.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the system in maintaining exam integrity and reducing cheating.

Research questions

  1. How effective is the remote examination proctoring system in ensuring the integrity of online exams?

  2. What impact does the system have on students' behavior and performance during remote exams?

  3. How do students and examiners perceive the usability and security of the proctoring system?

Significance of the study
The design and implementation of a remote examination proctoring system will ensure the security of online assessments, providing a reliable method for conducting exams while maintaining academic integrity. This system will help universities uphold high standards of examination practices in the digital age.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of the remote examination proctoring system for Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. The system will be limited to online exams and will not address other aspects of examination management, such as question paper development.
